Meet Michael McLouglin, a client at @Mindcanopy who has changed jobs, geographies and life in the last 12 months. Here are some of his learnings from a recent @Mindcanopy newsletter.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF.
I work in Canva, a visual design company who are based in Sydney, my role is the global head of product advocates.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TRY COACHING?
At first it was to work with someone outside my company and get a different perspective on some of the challenges I was facing, after finding it rewarding I used it to help navigate potential new opportunities.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING OR SURPRISING ASPECT?
I like how practical it was, I was given one or two things to work on post each session and was always given feedback on how to approach the issues I had. Each session was very personal and I felt my coach really understood where I needed support.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OVERARCHING TAKEAWAY OR LEARNING FROM YOUR COACHING SESSIONS?
We tend to focus on our areas of development and forget to double down on what we do well, my coaching sessions helped me refocus on these. The other would be the importance of consistently building your network, both in and out of work.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE ABOUT TO START?
Be as open as possible and try to bring specific situational examples of where you struggled to get the outcome you wanted. E.g Unsuccessful job interview.
