A common issue that crops up in coaching is people feeling lost or drifting in their lives. It’s normal to hear lots of self-criticism for not having “figured it out”, generally based on the perception that everyone else knows what they are doing.
Although some people have a strong north star in their lives, the majority are pinballed by life with the flipping paddles of circumstances and demands.
It’s ok to acknowledge if you are lost and to sit down and get comfortable with the discomfort. Just like in real life sometimes the worst thing we can do is stumble off in the hope of finding the right path. Instead use this moment to rest. An exhausted mind can be limited in outlook, so take your time to assess your situation. Understand your surroundings and recognise that for right now you are where you are meant to be.
Accepting that you are lost can be extremely freeing as you are removing the backpack of expectation that you could otherwise carry. Stress and pressure aren’t the travel companions for good decisions. Although you can’t stay lost forever, you can be there for a while. When you are lost with positive acceptance, rather than stress, you can use the time positively. Eventually, when you are ready to start your journey again it will be with deliberate intention.
So, no matter how lost you feel at times, never lose the opportunity to reflect with kindness and compassion. The right direction is within you.
